INDIANAPOLIS - Angie Dickerson recalls a long sleepless night in the home of his family who literally started with a bang Jamestown.

"I heard this pop, pop very strong, and next thing the smoke alarm starts going off. I knew immediately that something was wrong," she said.

After searching the house, Dickerson eventually traced the source of noise and smoke to something inside her smoke detector.

"I opened it and found pieces that came out of the battery and realized that he exploded," she said, pointing to a 9-volt battery damaged sitting on his kitchen table. "It was hot -- very hot -- and it was very obvious the minute I opened it up. I realized it blew out the back and one of the cells was open so I knew immediately it exploded.

Why do toy manufacturers recommend alkaline batteries over ...

Rechargeable batteries have a short “runtime”, that is, they are only good for a few hours operation before they need charging again. Some toys that have motors in them can drop this figure down even further. If a toy is in regular use, then rechargeable batteries make sense if you don’t mind recharging them a lot. They are good for several hundred charge-recharge cycles.

It is because alkaline batteries have a higher voltage than rechargeable batteries. Alkaline batteries are 1.5 volts per cell. Ni-Metal Hydride and Ni-Cadmium batteries are 1.2 volts per cell. This number is not exact but close.
